Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri

The highlight of our 2021 trip is to visit Larry and Luann near their neck of the woods. My sister, Cheri also flew out to stay on base with us. The nearest airport is Waynesville-St. Robert Regional Airport which is located on Fort Leonard Woods Army base and it was weird to be on a military base to pick Cheri up. It appears that its mainly for the base use and the terminal is really small, the size of small family room. We stayed at the Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area (LORA) Army recreation area near the base. We rented a pontoon boat for one of the days and did a little sight seeing and swimming. Luann prepared a fantastic dinner to cap the days travel.

We visited Bentonville, Arkansas, home of Walmart. It is on the site of Sam Walton’s original store and it is free to tour. Its a great little museum to visit and have some ice cream at the museum’s Spark Cafe. It has Sam Walton’s office as he left it and also the truck he drove.

Larry and LuAnn had us stop at a gas station to pick up some ice cream cones. Well it was fun and good too. The cones you see Larry and JoAnn eating are the small, yes these are the small cones! I passed and just had a small bowl.

Here’s the place, Shortstop Conoco, 18440 Marshall St, Garfield AR 72732. If your nearby its a great place to stop and take a break.

We did visit the Bagnell dam that on the Osage River in the U.S. state of Missouri, creating the Lake of the Ozarks and did some local hikes. We stopped at the Thorncrown Chapel which rises forty-eight feet into the Ozark sky. This magnificent wooden structure contains 425 windows and over 6,000 square feet of glass.

Oh and for all you Ozark series fans, we found Marty Bryde’s hideout!
